Встреча заканчивается на повышенных тонах, и Орлак, к своему удивлению, видит, как его рука выхватывает нож и швыряет в старика (он чудом остался невредим). Орлак жалуется Гоголю: «Мои руки живут собственной жизнью. И хотят убивать». Главный источник искренности – конечно, актерская работа Петера Лорре, для которого Безумная любовь стала 1-м американским фильмом. Карл Фройнд увидел его абсолютно лысым и лишенным всякой растительности на лице (каким он уже представал на экране в одном из своих 1-х немецких фильмов – Белый демон, Der weisse Damon, Курт Геррон, 1932); подчеркнул элегантную нежность его очертаний большим меховым воротником; придал ему медлительность и внезапную порывистость в жестах, благодаря чему он словно становится персонажем из другого мира, который, при всей своей чудовищности, все же кажется таким человечным в упорной борьбе за власть над другим человеком.N.B.
